Leasing agreement

My son is currently a lodger at 11 Mount Albertst, Stellenbosch. Landlord does not want him to give notice to leave on 18th of October as he has to start working in S'set West on 21 Oct. We have found lodgings for him in S'set West and he has given written notice to vacate premisis on 18 October. According to landlord he must pay rent for 1 November, however he is being paid for the full month of October. Nowhere in the lease agreement gives it my son leave to terminate the agreement only on the part of the landlord.
Would like to know what our rights are as i am under the impression that a person has 7 days from the 1st day of a month to give written notice to vacate lodging.
