High care staff
Unprofessional behavior by nursing staff

I was admitted at Wilgeheuwel Life hospital for Laminectomy and Fucion procedure by Dr A Botha on 11 September 2020. After surgery was nursed in High care unit for 24 Hours, but was schoched by the level of professionalism displayed by Nurses in that unit. Night care staff was sleeping on couches for most of the night, in spite of the alarms of monitors ringing. There concern were not the nursing care of patients in that unit. On Saturday, the next morning it was even worse.. Nurses were having fun, singing Tsotsoloza and eating, whilst patients were not attended to. Luckily I was transferred to the ward where I received wonderful basic nursing care, especially by the night shift staff. What bothers me was that the patients that were sharing the room, had the same bad experience as me. ( They had surgery already on 9 Sept 2020) I am very concerned about the quality of nursing care rendered by your High care staff. I know what is suppose to happen. because I am also a well skilled Registered Professional Nurse. Are the not suppose to render even better care as in the ward.? Another aspect which I noticed that most of the staff are only trained as General Nursing, Should mentoring not be given by well trained and staff???

I propose supervision to be upscaled and unannounced rounds to be conducted at night and during weekend.

Kindly provide feedback on outcome and what measure were implemented to improve the quality of nursing care.
