Spec-savers Sa
Stale medical aid claim

Health & Medicine

I bought two pairs of prescription glasses from Spec-savers in 2011. It was confirmed that the medical aid would pay for the glasses, I only had to cover the additional extras.

A few months later, I started receiving phone calls and a vaguely threatening email saying I had to pay the outstanding fees. What outstanding fees? The ones the medical aid refused to pay.

I paid (the words 'legal action will be taken' are strong motivators to a student), and two years later, when I went to renew my prescription, I was told the real reason.

The claim originated in 2011, and was only sent through to the medical aid early 2012, beyond the 120 days required by the medical aid. The claim was rejected as 'stale', and I had to pay for someone else's incompetence. Why wasn't it sent through on time? Why did I have to be treated like this? That no one told me the truth is infuriating.
