Dentist filled tooth that has exposed nerves

I visited the dentist for cleaning my teeth and taking image for a denture.
The dentist suggest I fill my other tooth that had decayed since 2002 so because she is a professional i agreed.
After a week I filled the tooth, I have been having pains but I ignored them, thinking since it is still a new filling.
Today I visited the doctor and they took X-ray and then she told me the filling is close to the nerve.
Now I am told to either do a root canal or take it out and i am liable to pay for all of that. Yet I first wasted my money by paying for the filling and now i must also pay to rectify her mistake?
Please HELP.
