Reservations process completely stupid

I called Ed's Diner to make a reservation for 3 people for dinner as I know the restaurant gets quite busy on weekends. I was told that they only take a certain number of reservations to make sure there is space for their walk in clientele and that I should phone back the next day (a Saturday) to find out if there was any space available after they had confirmed all their reservations. I then asked if it would not be possible to take my name and number and let me know if there was a space. I was told that that would not be possible. I then called back as I was asked and got told (by a different person) that that is not the way things are done. I was told that to make a successful booking I had to call a week in advance. This is not explained on the website at all. I was then told that I could always just come through and be put on a waiting list for a table. The waiting area for this is outside. It is winter. All I can say is DO NOT try and get a reservation and just go in the summer so that you at least don't freeze while waiting to be seated. Incompetence everywhere.
