Galaxy "Sleep of Death" - will be the death of me!

Electronics and household app.

Two weeks ago my father got a phone upgrade from Vodacom Fourways. After about a week the Galaxy Ace Plus started randomly going to sleep mode - during which no calls could be received, messages saved, nothing.
I googled the problem only to find it is a common, well documented defect in this model dubbed "Sleep of Death".
My father being ill could not address this, so I went at my first available opportunity back to the Vodacom store. I took in my researched info and addressed this with Sipho - the store manager, requesting I pay in the difference and get a different model. He informed me there was nothing that could be done as the one week warranty had passed. My request for reconsideration based on 1. My father being ill, and 2. The phone only displaying this behaviour randomly in the first week not indicating a major problem, fell on deaf ears.
Now, our brand new phone is sitting in Vodacare, while they go through the process upgrades, fault finding etc.
Samsung - I ask you please, google "sleep of death" and tell me honestly there are no problems with this model. Please also tell me I am being unreasonable by requesting to pay in for a better model. Please help us.
