Doing work without getting authorisation for costs

Never service a volvo at Autoworks. We sent ours in last year to check why the emissions light was on. They diagnosed that it was the pollen filter - which they tried and failed to remove and then simply blew the area out with compressed air. The a/c would work for short spells then blow only hot air after this - we returned twice to have the problem resolved, paying each time.
This last time we left the car there in October, explaining that we did not want to spend a fortune on the car, they were unable to resolve the problem and sent it to volvo and then call us to inform us we have to pay for pollen filter repair. At no stage was a quotation given to us or an authorisation for this cost to be billed.
the last quote (84184) was for R3741 and now they charge over R5000 for the repairs having given absolutely no further quotation!
Be very careful when sending your car in for any repairs here!
