Incompetent technicians OR trying to rip me off

A few months ago I took my diesel X5 to SMG to have what I thought an oil leak fixed. I told them it looks like my car is leaking oil but the oil level stays the same.
Their service agent first called me and said they diagnosed the car and that its the EGR valve that needs to be replaced and I would have my car the next day as they would have to order the part. Cost R6862.74 SUBJECT TO FURTHER DIAGNOSIS. My response fix it. 1hr later he calls again tells me my turbo is broken cost R28739.92 to fix and 2days to repair SUBJECT TO FURTHER DIAGNOSIS. My response, the car drove perfectly fine I dont think its the turbo give my car back. This month I took car to Forsdicks Tygervalley. They diagnosed the problem to fuel pressure limit valve leaking diesel from the top of the engine. Diesel runs down gathers dirt by the time it drips on floor, to a layman it looks like oil. Cost R2800 fitted and supplied.
My leak is gone and car is driving beautifully. Nothing wrong with the turbo confirmed by Forsdicks BMW.
SMG incompetent OR rip off? I dont know but I wont be going back there.
