My rental car, which I had been driving for almost two months and was due to return shortly, was rear-ended by a young driver on 26Feb on Barry Hertzog road. He was profusely apologetic and took complete responsibility for the accident.
We went through all the formalities of documenting the crash and filing the police report.
Avis Rivonia informed me I had to pay the liability fee of R19, 200 immediately, the money would not be debited only "blocked" and would be "unblocked" and reimbursed within 30 days. This was a guarantee.
I was also promised a replacement car of the same class for the remainder of the rental. They gave me a car of the class below, saying they didn't have any equivalents available. So I was paying for a Corolla but driving a Hyundai for the remainder of the rental.

It has now been 85 days on. The money was debited, not "blocked" and the goalposts seem to have changed. Avis informs me Mr Letsie's assurances were not policy. Furthermore Adele Grobler from the claims department now asserts that I may not be reimbursed all the money, as and when they decide to pay me back.
On average it takes a week for Avis to email me back when I enquire about this case.
