DHL lost my phone and evades responsibility

DHL branch in Johannesburg told me that they had lost my new galaxy note 2 cellphone. They told me before I posted it that there was no need to worry and that it will not get lost. They did not tell me anything about insurance at all. Once they notified me by sms and I called them. They tried to not receive my phone call and tried to say that they were 'busy'. After finally I got hold of them, they said that the phone was within the DHL facility. This meant that a DHL employee had to have it. The manager agreed to the possibility of an employee could have the phone when they pass the package through the special x-ray machines. However, when I ask them if they will reimburse the phone they abruptly said not because we weren't 'insured' and that it was not their responsibility as it was sent from the Cape Town branch. When I phoned them, they said that it was the Johannesburg branch's problem. They said that they will only pay back the postage fees of R250. The phone was worth nearly R10000. After that, they did not bother calling back.
