How can they charge me what they want?

First off I must say that I was is in arrears with my account. I am now able to pay installments again, so when they contacted me we agreed on installments, but a while down the line they told me that I still owed them a said amount, and after the next payment I made they phoned per usual just before payment was due and told me that I owe R800 more than the previous amount, even after an installment was paid. the next phone call I recieved, I asked them where are they getting their info from, as obviously something was off, they said they are right and I am not. I then asked for a statement before I pay anything else, which they bluntly said no, they can;t unless I give written consent, which to me is stupid, its something they can just email to me. I refused to pay any further unless I had a statement to check the balnce of my account. I then recieved an email asking me to pay, which I replied to stating the same as the phone conversation, no statement, no payment. Couple of weeks later, recieved a statement from attorneys, which said I now need to pay legal fees! Like I said I know I am in arrears, but I can't just pay random amounts. Now I am stuck with legal fees as well!
