Absa Credit Card

Business & Finance

I received a call on the 11th Feb 2013 from a lawyer that I owe R1895.13 on my ABSA credit card. I closed this account in 2004. I bought a house 2 years ago and my ITC record was clean. I purchased a car in December (3 months ago) and my name was clean. Now I have an ITC record against my name which is affecting my credit record. I spent 2 hours in Absa trying to find out what is going on. The bank had no record of me on their system and eventually their legal department found me on their system and agreed to mail me a statement which I have still not received. I apparently owed R1000.00 in 2004 and now interest and legal fees have been added. I feel it is unprofessional and very bad business practise to just list someone without giving them any time to sort out / rectify the unknown problem. How can I pay something without having the supporting documentation to the claim against me? As a consumer do I not have any legal protection?
