On Friday 24th January I made an online credit card purchase off an international supplier's website for $5000 (as I have done numerous times in the last two years). An sms came through stating that R50 265.86 had been charged for the transaction. When I checked my statement on Monday I noticed that the amount was taken off on the 25th and was now R56 033, 45. There has never been a discrepancy between the sms amount and billed amount before. I can only deduce that with the volatile rand at the moment the bank was keen to make as much money as possible out of the deal. As always it appears that I as a faithful client of 35 years must carry the can for this.
