Late processing of debit account demands

I have a debit card which in theory means I cannot go over-drawn. I made transactions on 3rd January 2014 which were not processed by Standard bank until 8th January 2014. This resulted in my account being overdrawn. A debit card should NOT work if no funds are available. I ONLY used my debit card this month. How can standard bank now call me and demand payment tomorrow. I have no funds for this. There mistake / system error. They must fix it!
