Policy not being cancelled and still being billed

In November I called the insurer to cancel my policy. Since it was billed in advance, you'd assume that they would not bill me again in December, but they did. After calling them when they billed me after cancellation (a month later) I was told by an agent by the name of Peter that the cancellation request had not been put through.
Now I was not happy, but he said he would arrange it and I would be paid in 48hours. The call was made on Saturday, I called to confirm on Monday, and nothing was paid out by Tuesday, 48 hours. Given that it was a holiday on Wednesday, you'd assume they would do it by Thursday which is today, but still nothing.
After calling them back for the third/fourth time at my expense with no one giving me feedback, after confirming with my bank (same one they use) on Thursday I'm told that my policy shows as being active in one deptment and cancelled in another. Now this still doesn't help me as I still have to wait another knows how long. I know I used to work for the company, but this is. NOW the problem is mine, not theirs. Thats what's been happening since November. this, this a bad way to start the new year. And all I'll get is a sorry.
