Account dormant with no explanation

After calling the hotline it came to my attention that my account has been dormant for 6 months. And why is this? Well apparently I had not selected the option to received marketing material!! I was never informed of this.
So please could someone explain to me how I get this changed? I cannot do this online and I honestly don't have the patience to speak to the consultants over the telephone as they are not really very helpful nor friendly.
