ABSA account that was never closed

I went to the branch to have my bank account closed in Sept'11. I followed the procedure of paying the amount due of about R55, and was told it would take a few days to be finalized. Only to get a call on the 7-Nov-2013, telling me my account is still active and I owe ABSA an amount of over R5 500... I have called, I have gone to the bank, but I still don't know why the account is still Active, how it can be Active for over two years without any transactions, why no-one has mentioned anything up until now, etc. Upon asking these questions at the same branch, a lady named Shirley said she doesn't know either. She will get back to me on Monday. My account is still Active in the meanwhile going onto year number THREE. I don't know if I should laugh or cry... The best part is that, after the call that I received two weeks ago, I initially went to the branch in Plumstead, who saw the payment that I made to close the account. Now, it's vanished. No one in Khayelitsha branch can see the payment.
