Bad service leads to bad credit report

I had a cheque account with FNB from 2005. In 2011 my husband and I decided to go travelling and left the country indefinitely. I went to the FNB branch in Atlas Rd Boksburg (which is since closed) and got myself a cash passport. I informed the lady who helped me that once all the funds had been transferred she was to close my account. Since I would be overseas at the time I was instructed to write and sign a letter to this effect. Which I did. Now, upon my return, two and a half years later I find out the account hadn't been closed and I now am sitting with bad credit as a result. I went to the Sunward Branch to seek assistance and have been told that I have to pay the outstanding balance of R1900 or sit with the bad credit on my name, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I DIDN'T WANT TO HAPPEN. Why would I keep an account open which is costing me bank charges if I didn't intend on being in the country for an undetermined amount of time??? And as as result, I cant open an account anywhere... Thanks FNB!
