Close my account!!!

Early march i sent a email requesting my fnb account to be closed, months went by and today i recieve an sms stating that i owe them money!!!
im disgusted in the services that i recieved. i call the call centre and im told i need to pay that amount then close the account. why am i liable wen u guys didnt inform me that i need to go into the branch and close the account. i didnt get any sms or notifaications with regards to a balance that a accumulating on my account.
the reason i closed the account was due to the monthly serice fee, im in no position to go to the branch and close the account.
i will not be liable for fees thats being charged without my knowledge i was under the impression that the account was closed but today months later i get a stupid sms.
i want this account to be closed today and the balance to be cleared. today!!!
