Mango Airlines
Improper handling of bicycle

Traveling & Tourism

I flew to PE with my bike without any problems. Bike was handled appropriately. When checking in to fly back to ORT on 15Apr2013, I had to open the already sealed bike box for inspection. I did this and I checked that the box was properly sealed again. Upon arrival at OR Tambo, all the bikes on the flight came in via the conveyor belts!! Usually, when travelling with a bicycle, the bike are brought into the luggage area by trolley. These bikes should be kept upright to prohibit damage. There were multiple stickers to this effect on my box ("Handle with care" and "This Side Up"). My bike box was completely upside down and was reopened again from the bottom. I don't know where this happened (PLZ or ORT). It was not closed properly and thus as I took my bike from the conveyor belt, some of the goods inside the box fell out. Fortunately, after inspection, nothing was lost, as I could retrieve everything. This service is completely unacceptable as this equipment are very expensive and an additional bike handling fee of R400 was paid for travelling with a bicycle.
