3 paid tickets to Namibia - ONE suitcase

Traveling & Tourism

My wife and I were very negatively surprised just before Christmas when we were departing from ORT for Windhoek. We were told that one piece of luggage may not exceed 23 kg. Our luggage, a single suitcase for the entire family was 32kg. So we had to pay R 250 in order to be able to proceed with the check in. this is a ridiculous policy. We had good reasons only to travel with one piece of luggage, since I had a serious knee operation 3 weeks prior to the flight and was still walking on crutches and therefore unable to carry my own piece of luggage. We received the same treatment in Windhoek on our flight back. To the best of our knowledge all other airlines follow the policy of 23kg per person, and it doesn't matter into how many or how few pieces of luggage this weight is distributed. For example I if my personal luggage was overweight by 10kg and the person behind me (a complete stranger) would have 10 kg "spare" then we could just "combine our weigh. At no point were we informed of this policy. when writing this to SAA customer Care Center I was told: "I am disappointed that you were unable to carry two bags of 16kgs each ..." sure with 2 crutches and my wife pushing a pram...
