18 hour delayed flight (we hope)

My flight from Kimberley to Johannesburg at 16:10 on 14 August was initially delayed for 20 mins because of a broken plane in Bloemfontein. The delay increased to one hour because of passengers that arrived late. We were further delayed to 21:30 because of a door that was damaged by a flight attendant when he closed it. It was deemed unsafe to fly. After waiting for an engineer to come from Johannesburg they realised the damage was more serious than initially reported. The flight was cancelled and we were booked into hotels on the expense of SA Express (Thank you for that). Initially we were told we'll fly at 07:45 on 15 August. It is now 08:45 and we have just been informed that the plane will only arrive at 09:30 and leave at 10:10. While we were waiting two planes have left (one at 20:15 that was supposed to leave at 18:55 and one at 07:50 this morning).

I understand that our safety has to come first, hence the delay, but 1) Why could we not be pushed to either of those two flights. I had an very important meeting this morning which I had to cancel
2) why don't they have an accredited engineer on stand-by in these small towns to assist when there is damage?
