Cancelled flight and I have to pay for hotel

I am arriving back in SA on an international flight in the evening and Kulula cancelled the last flight out on the day and they will not pay for the hotel costs I must now incur due to this.
This is totally unacceptable and I am surprised that this is not covered by the consumer protection laws.
The customer care does not give two hoots and will not help in anyway. Its a totally disgraceful attitude from them.
