Account billed but contract cancelled

I took a contract telephonically with MTN and returned the phone within 7 working days on 4 April 2013 to MTN Gatemax, KZN. I thought that since I returned my phone on time, the contract would be cancelled. This morning I got a beep on my phone and there was a debit for MTN, while I don't have the phone. Mind you on 2 occasions the consultants at MTN Gatemax had trouble with find my records and I was told to phone Ignition and/or Summe
