Dishonesty! Illegal overcharging over R1430!

After having endless problems getting my line installed (see my other post) I finally got the line installed.

I was told that adsl was charged 2 months in advance for the first month and so my bill will be slightly higher. I accepted this. I was also told that if I was not happy with the Internet speed I can upgrade at any point. I was also told that should I wish to cancel my Internet there would be a penalty fee for the remaining term of the contract.

But at no point did the call centre sales consultant explain that to upgrade to a higher speed is considered a cancellation of contract to the lower speed and that the penalty will be incurred.

Into the second month of the contract I upgraded to the 2MBit/s uncapped line. Now after receiving my 2nd bill the total is over R2600 of which a contract forfeiture was charged totaling R1430.37.

This is simply blatantly dishonest. Telkom should be more ethical and also conform to the new CPA law which has been in effect from April 2011. Under the CPA act the consumer is protected by government up to 6 months should the product not be satisfactory. So not only is telkom cheating... It's also!
