Cell C
Prepaid data disillusionment

Telecommunications

After lengthy explanations by CellC staff on the different duration periods over which prepaid data bundles of different sizes are valid for, I initially purchased a 3Gb data bundle in June 2013 which was to be valid for 365 days from date of purchase. All smaller bundles expire over periods ranging from a few days to no more than a month, after which any unused data would be forfeited. When my initial 3Gb ran out in November 2013, I decided to recharge via online banking services which automatically showed the Cell C prepaid data pricing structure as found in the Cell C promotional brochure. Assuming the 3Gb bundle provided best value for money due to its 365-day validity, I recharged with this bundle. After 30 days I was dismayed to learn the expensive way that only 3Gb bundles purchased in CellC stores were valid for a year, in the process forfeiting 2Gb of unused data. In my opinion prior access to this crucial bit of information is not obvious (or possible), and regretfully I shall endeavor to henceforth travel the more known path and merely take out a MTN TopUp data contract.
