My phone just went off

I took a HTC direre X S/N :358835043044707 on a contract early last year so around novemer my phone was flat when i charged it flashes red light so i charged it the whole night but when i wake up and switched it ON it didnt switch on so i took it to the servise centre in midrand after they found the fault the told me that i must pay which i dont understand because the phone is on contract and im sure every phone come with product a guaratee the phone is not even a year old. Please assist as this not Good servive to me because i cant pay for something that is not working
