Phone warranty a hoax

I sent my phone recently purchased on a contract at Cellucity Greenacres for repairsThe phone was only used for a month and a half then put back into it's box. When we took the phone out of it's box the touch screen was not working any longer. We took the phone to Cellucity to have it repaired. A week later we got a phone call from Cellucity stating that this phone is liquid damaged although it had been in a box for over a month. They also stated that it would cost R1743.16 to repair the phone.
On returning to the shop to complain as this is not possible as the phone had been in a box the manager, Francious du Plessis told my husband the phone cannot be repaired and liquid damage could mean spit damaged the phone, or he perhaps stood in the rain and it was damaged.
No-one offered us a second opinion as we felt the reason for the phone being damaged didn't make sense.. I referto job card number 9442417. We decided to take the phone home as we weren't prepared to pay this amount for a phone still under warranty. When we switched on the phone it was working! Our said irreparable phone was working! How can I trust the legitimacy of any Vodacom repair centre? Do warranties exist?
