Brand new number and spam SMS's already starts

Hours after activating my new contract I got my first spam SMS. Minutes later I received a phishing SMS from a fake Absa.

So how is this possible if I've not given my number to any companies - it's brand new!

The reason I went through the pain of changing my number was exactly this - I'm tired of being woken up at 1 in the morning because a Discovery broker is trying to sell me medical aid or some other non-sense.
