Guarantee on battery... not us, maybe vodacom

I own a 9360, the initial battery lasted 14 months. and I bought a new one at mtn on 25 May 2013. This "new" battery only has half it's battery life, teh second half just dissappears. when I bought the battery I was told that I have a 6 month guarantee.
Today they tell me that the battery and my phone must be sent to Oracle (or somewhere) for a week and a half. and they want to give me an old nokia 2110 (or similar) phone to use in the interim. When I bought the new battery, I was told that I should charge it for 12 hours for the first charge and then use.
Today, one very smart guy starts telling me that I'm an to have done that, I was supposed to run it down and then charge it for 4 hours. Now they tell me that it is my fault, but for pete's sake, that is the advice I was given by MTN staff, I did not randomly select 12 hours as a suitable charge time???
And why do they need my phone to check the battery? has technology gone backwards in the past few years? I hope not, I like the idea that I can still take my car battery out and have it tested in isolation of the vehicle. and since when has a guarantee been reduced to inconvenient policies and procedures? I walked out.
