Cell C - rippoff

I was in a cellular contract with cellC. after my contract expired with cellC i did not cancel my contract but went on a month to month payment with them. a year and a half later i contacted them to ask them what the normal procedure was to port my number to another network. they said i needed to email them a letter stating im cancelling my contract and i needed to pay whatever outstanding fees that were due by myself. i fowarded them with the letter canceling my contract and paid the outstanding monies due which was /- R1600. they then ported my number and i thought that was all sorted out, until recently, 3 years later cellC contacted me stating i owe them monies. they said they contacted me and on record i confirmed i will pay them, so i asked them for the recordings of that call and they said they will get back to me, which they didnt and i just received an sms from them stating i have been handed over. please assist me as to what i can do to rectify the situation i am in.
