Charged for data downloaded by faulty handset

Telecommunications

My Samsung Galaxy SII handset started to malfunction 4 months into the contract period, overheating and with very limited battery life. The phone was handed in for repairs at the Bloemfontein branch. I received the phone two weeks later and was told that a faulty electrical part was replaced. The problem did not recur since. I did however receive a bill for R5322.33 for March/April 2012 and R867.26 for April/May 2012, the period during which the phone was malfunctioning. My monthly bills before and since have never exceeded the minimum amount of approximately R458. Upon enquiry, it was established that the handset had been repeatedly downloading data from the following web [URL Removed] during the period that it was malfunctioning. While I was clearly not at fault for incurring the exorbitant charges, I was told that the charges were valid and that I should just accept it.
The treatment I received as a longstanding MTN customer leaves a lot to be desired. I expected a thorough investigation of what had gone wrong, and at the very least to be refunded the charges and compensated for the inconvenience caused.
