Want Cell number back

My husband's company had a business contract with MTN and then the company liquidated, Now my husband wants his number back so he can use it as pay as you go and apparently he cannot because the company has an outstanding amount owing, if the company has liquidated, I am sure that you don't expect to receive any monies from them so why can't my husband just get his number to prepaid, He has had this number for many years now and do not intend on losing it. I think it's totally unacceptable to do this to the end user.
