Owing the company after 5 years

I used to work for the company and i left 5 years ago, you were required to pay all the outstanding amounts on the company contract in fact the money was deducted from your salary then your number is converted to prepaid. all was well until late last year when i received a call from their legal department that i owe vodacom more than R3000.00 for the contract. I have never received a letter nor sms from them saying i have an outstanding balance. now they are harassing and threatening to blacklist if i dont pay. my question is why only now, when did they realise that i owe them, why was it left this long. i have never moved or changed my number what brought this now. i think the company need to check because i am not paying a cent. the funny thing i paid all my other accounts if i knew i owed them why wouldn't i have paid them also.
