Cancelling contract

I had a contract with cell c, which started in 02/2006 and end in 02/2008. I was not told that for a contract to be cancelled i need to write a letter. I was only informed about that in 07/2008 after someone tried to get any upgrade using me details. I then sent them a letter to cancel the contract. The contract was cancelled in Aug 2008. I was never told about any outstanding amount. They handed over the outstanding amount to their lawyers and i was only contacted in July 2013. I paid the outstanding balance on the 17/07/2008 and was promised a letter which should take 14 days. To date i havent received the letter. I am getting bad credit rating because of that. I need to move on with my life.
