MTN disconnects in error, client must wait weeks

I made a request to have my number made available for porting to another service provider at the end of my contract period. Which was the 28 July 2013.
MTN in error disconnected my cell number in a manner that meant I could not port it to another network.
Upon calling them to resolve the issue, I have not been able to get them to make my number available for porting.
They've given me vague indications of up to 14 days to resolve. Which is completely unaceptable as they made an error. Which I now have to bear the cost of.
You cannot call anyone directly due to their call centre approach. You cannot go to a physical office that actually makes the changes, except for direct shops who themselves have to use the call centre.
It's highly unprofessional and the don't give a attitude is horrendous.
I'm also certain it is illegal to withold my number from me and prevent me leaving hte network.
