Refusing to terminate contract

Virgin Active Wonderpark made me sign a financially binding contract while I was employed on a temporary basis, the person who helped me said that "if your contract ends with your employer, you will be able to cancel without any problems."
My contract was terminated and now I need to cancel the membership as to being unemployed and not being able to pay and they are telling me that I need to pay R2000 in order for me to be able to cancel.
I do not get why I have to pay for a service that I no longer and need and no longer will use. It is not like I bought their equipment, I purchased an service and now I cannot continue with the service.
I initially froze my account which then they required me to pay R100 per month while I could not gain access to the club, and now I have to cancel and I still have to pay!
