Difficult returns policy for simple swap

My fiance purchased a winter jacket for me on his account on Saturday 27/04/2013. When I got home and tried it on over what I would wear in winter, I realised it was too big. When I took it back on Sunday without him, slip in had and swing ticket still attached it was a huge ordeal to simply return it for a different size. I was told by the manager that as it was purchased on account, they needed to have the account holder present, which was not possible on Sunday. When I decided to leave it, they said they can exchange it as a cash sale but then stamped it as having being exchanged and was told that I will not be allowed under any circumstances to bring the jacket back a second time should there be anything wrong with it???!!! I cannot believe that simply wanting to swap the size of a jacket still in perfect condition as per the terms and conditions on the back of the till slip turned out to be such an ordeal, and me being made to feel almost like a criminal! I understand that you have strict policies to adhere to, but then the customer needs to be informed in detail about this especially when they saw that my fiance is purchasing an item for me on his account.
