Refusal to exchange damaged goods

I bought my wife a handbag and within 1 week of her using it one of the handle straps came off. Took it back to the shop and was told the bag was overloaded which is the reason for the damage. They should speciy the maximum load capacity as the bag was only carrying a purse, cellphone, lipstick and other lightweight items. The reason for non refusal of repairing is insufficient and not based on facts.
