Sorry for your loss??

I went to the Western Cape over the festive season from 13 December 2013 to 28 December 2013, where I bought a pair of Puma Plakkies at an Edgars store. Short after my arrival back home, the plakkies tore. I paid R275 cash for these plakkies, so I expected better quality.
On Monday, 6 January 2014, I took these plakkies to the Edgars branch in Vaal Mall. I explained to the employee at customer service/ exchange that the plakkies tore and also explained to him that I do not have the receipt any more, as it was bought in the Western Cape while we were on holiday. You can see that the plakkies are still new. He then called the store manager, Vernon, to come and assist me.
When Vernon arrived, I also explained the whole story to him. His response was that if I do not have a receipt, it is not his problem. I asked why he doesn't want to exchange these plakkies for me, as Edgars is a supplier of the product, even though I do not have the receipt? His then told me that he cannot do that and that he is sorry for my loss, as it is my problem.
I nodded, said OK, turned around and walked away.
Neither of these two employees even looked at the plakkies
This level of service is unacceptable
