Exchange a gift

My husband was given a case of beer as a gift. He doesn't drink the specific beer. The word TOPS appear on the the packaging so it is clearly one of their products. I phoned the manager at TOPS, Plattekloof and asked if I could exchange it for another brand. All he said was, 'NO, it may be past the sell by date" Surely he can check it. I'll be going back to P&P for my purchases since their staff is always bending over backwards to please their customers.
