Unwilling to exchange

My husband bought me a pair of earrings on 24 September 2013 for as a gift. He was assured by the sales person that I am welcome to exchange it should i not like it. On 26 October I visited the East Rand Mall branch with the slip to exchange for something else. First I was told that they do not exchange earrings. After reminding her my husband was assured that I can exchange she looked at the dates and said I can not exchange after 14 days. She further said that if it was not earrings she might still be able to help. It seemed to me the policy changed as the conversation went on. I did not request a refund, only to exchange it for something I will actually wear.
