Refusal to help with lost item

I went to Pick n Pay Norwood Mall late Sunday afternoon on the 18th of August 2013.
At the end of my shopping my mother and I went to buy a carton of cigarettes, we then went to the car packed it and went home. When we got home we realized that there was no carton of cigarettes, I immediately went back to inquire about it, but Pick n Pay staff claimed there was nothing they could do about it because the product left the store. Today on the 19th I have been phoning them to try and get assistance and they were extremely rude on the phone, suddenly ignoring me and talking to people in the back round as I was on the phone and then finally putting the phone down all together without helping me resolve the problem. They keep claiming that once a product has left their store it is no longer their responsibility, but I believe that they are still part of the center and it is their responsibility to deal with the matter and replace the carton that was on their premises.
