We had the great fortune to host friends from Germany over this holiday season, and we proudly showed off the beauties of this city to them. However, the price increase policy at your Canal Walk Store left us all with a bitter feeling after some souvenir shopping.

My German guest saw a crystal ring in the window and decided that this would be a suitable gift for her mother, even though she knows that this same product is available in Germany, where, by law, ALL items must be sold at the price displayed, irrespective of any planned, intended or imposed increases.

She saw this ring in the window for R980.00 but was then charged R1130.00. Your shop assistant informed us that the price increase had come into effect the day before and they had been "too busy" to change all displayed prices in the shop. Really?

When I asked for the supervisor I was told that he/she was still away on holiday. The sales assistant also told us that staff could not charge the lower price as the computers/till were already programmed to charge the higher price.

Not wanting to arrive back home empty handed, my friend then reluctantly paid the higher price.

I find this practice unacceptable.
