I get billed - alarm doesn't work

I signed a contract with ADT last year and tried to cancel it within a day. Due to incomptetence they never cancelled it. So I'm stuck! Then the alarm never worked. They replaced the battery. Still doesn't work. On the 12 February 2013 our house was broken in to (case no.: Honeydew 524/02/2013). All our laptops, my handbag and samsung tablet was.

Now ADT is demanding that I pay nearly R8, 000.00 to cancel the contract after they have failed to keep their end of the contract.
