Does anybody work here? Cancel of contract/dispute

It has been nearly a week and a half since I've contacted ADT to cancel my contract. I have followed up on three occasions (once over the phone and twice via email) but have heard nothing from ADT. In addition, the company now claims that I have a two year contract with them and wants me to pay a huge cancellation fee (70% of my remaining contract). This despite my contract with them not overtly mentioning any duration and the salesperson repeatedly telling me it is on a month-by-month.
