The Citizen
Watch out for incorrect billing

Newspapers & Magazines

I have subscribed to The Citizen newspaper for many years. I recently received 5 email and 1 renewal notice through the post. All stated R392.46 as the 6 month subscription requirement. I phoned the call centre and agreed to this amount with the call centre rep Geoffrey. Within 15 minutes I received a sms stating that R522 had been debited to my credit card account on behalf of Avusa Media, the owners of The Citizen. When I queried the debit with the Citizen call centre I was informed that their rates had been increased. After a prolonged argument the call centre rep agreed to reverse the difference between the 2 amounts, but he could not do it immediately. So 15 minutes to debit my account, but could not advise how long the credit would take to process. I cancelled the subscription. I advised my banker and they sent me a sms confirming the reversal of the transaction.
Lo and behold this morning I check my card account and the debit has been reinstated and after querying this with the bank I was informed that the amount had probably been re submitted and I must fill in a dispute form and return it to the bank. Moral of the story don't leave banking details with suppliers.
