Could not sell product because it was discontinued

I wanted to purchase two roll-on deodorants from AVON at N1 City Shopping Cnt, Goodwood. When they wanted to ring up the products on the till, the barcode was not active on the till. The sales person told me that they were unable to sell them to me because they had been discontinued (even though they had stock) and they would have to return them.
