Payment was found but still being charged intrest

In 2009 we paid our tv license and have so every year, we faxed proof of payment but it was never allocated to our account as we used the wrong ref no. after 3 years they credited our account but have been charging us interest and know we are being harassed to pay the interest, how is this possible that I have to pay for their incompetence, I have spoke to managers, emailed them and now I am getting lawyers letters to pay INTREST!
