Upfront requirements to have claims approved

I had to go for an MRI and CT scan as I am battling with constant headaches. My GP got a referral from a specialist to send me. When I phoned Discovery before the scans and asked for authorisation to have these two procedures done, they didn't have the courtesy to inform me that they specifically need the referral letter from the specialist otherwise they will not pay out the claim. It is now almost two months later, it has taken me 3 emails and 6 phone calls to only find out today that they will still not pay out the claim because the GP letter stating the specialist's name is not sufficient. It would be nice on the first day that they declined the claim they specifically stated the requirements - we need a form of XYZ nature with ABC details on as proof that the specialist referred you.
